The Janata Shikshana Samiti a pioneer in education had its humble beginning way back in 1944 with the JSS Banashankari College Started by the Karnataka Education Board (KE Board) with a mere strength of 40 students. His Holiness Swamiji of Pejavar mutt, Udupi, has blessed the samiti by being its President. The JSS grew by strength to strength and various institutions were started to cater to educational requirements of the people under the able direction of Pujya Dr.Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, Srishketra Dharmasthala as the Chairman of JSS and under the initiative and leadership of Dr. N. Vajrakumar, Secretary of the Samiti. Today, JSS stands tall atop the Mailarlinga hill, 2511ft. above sea level, along the Pune-Bangalore highway running a chain of 18 educational institutions from pre-primary to post graduate level including professional institutions

Late. Shri. R.S. Hukkerikarji (1886-1963), a freedom fighter, national leader, teacher, educationist, a staunch supporter of Khadi and village industries is the founder of Janata Shikshana Samiti, Dharwad.

His Holiness Sri. Vishweshateertha Sripadangalawar of Pejawar Mutt, Uupi, a religious teacher with a anationalist outlook, a builder of educational institutions, Hostels, choultries, a spiritual and social leader of national standing, is the president of JSS.

Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Shrikshetra, Dharmasthala, a President of SDM Society, Ujre (D.K.), SDM Educational Trust, a Padmabhushana Awardee, recipient of national and international awards for his social service activities, a great champion of vocational education, rural development and cultural project covering 81 villages of Belthangady Taluk of Mangalore Dist, recipient of a Hon. D. Litt from Mangalore University, is the chairman of JSS.
